Patients with neurological and mobility impairments now have access to innovative gait-training technology at many of Ernest Health’s medical rehabilitation hospitals.

The Rise&Walk®, developed by Nashville-based company Healing Innovations, Inc., is a full-spectrum gait trainer that synchronizes upper and lower extremity movements. This versatile neurorehabilitation station integrates robotic-assisted gait training, seated activities, and a balance support system to enhance mobility recovery.

“By integrating this technology into our hospitals’ therapy programs, we enhance patient care while also providing objective data to track patient progress, reducing injury risks for staff, and improving overall therapy efficiency,” says Lynn Fleming, Chief Clinical Officer at Ernest Health.

The Rise&Walk® helps patients regain mobility by providing:

- Multiple movement modes tailored to individual needs
- Personalized treatment sessions designed for comfort and effectiveness
- Optimized step training for greater efficiency
- Engaging and interactive therapy sessions

Currently, 11 Ernest Health hospitals provide this technology to their patients, with six more hospitals preparing to implement in their own facilities by the end of 2025.

Patient Success Highlight with Rise&Walk Technology

Among those who have benefited from this technology is Phil Frick (Pictured Above), a 75-year-old distribution manager from Newberry, S.C. Phil was diagnosed with thoracic and cervical stenosis with myelopathy, or spinal cord compression. He underwent a lumbar decompression and fusion as recommended by his neurosurgeon. Following surgery, he returned home but experienced a fall that resulted in a leg fracture, leading him to Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital for specialized rehabilitative care.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Phil couldn’t walk or stand and became easily tired during activities. During his stay, he worked the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team who developed an individualized treatment plan to help him achieve his goals of walking and regaining independence in activities of daily living. His physical therapy included gait-training with the Rise&Walk® to aid his recovery. After completing his treatment at the hospital, Phil now walks with a walker, is able to feed himself, and can complete most activities of daily living independently or with modifications.

“This technology is designed in alignment with the latest neurorecovery research, a critical component of functional rehabilitation,” Fleming says. “We’re proud to offer Rise&Walk® across our hospitals to help patients maximize their recoveries.”
